Who qualifies for the interpreter-assisted test

The standard class B teoriprøve is offered in seven languages: Norwegian (bokmål/nynorsk), Northern Sami, English, Arabic, Sorani and Turkish (official list). Candidates who need an interpreter to understand the questions can apply for an assisted test. The need must be documented, and approval is required before booking.

The application covers the theory test for passenger cars, mopeds, tractors, motorcycles and snowmobiles. It is not available for the heavy classes (C1, C, CE, D1, D), ADR or professional-driver exams (SVV rules).

How the test itself works

The format differs from the regular computer test:

• You sit in a separate room together with an examiner (sensor), while the interpreter joins remotely, by video.
• The examiner passes the questions to the interpreter, and the interpreter renders them in your language.
• You may answer in your own language through the interpreter — or directly to the examiner in Norwegian.

Prepare for the driving-theory knowledge required for class B, including the rules and signs. Follow Statens vegvesen’s instructions for your approved assisted test.

How to apply — step by step

1. The licence application — Din side

   First, the ordinary førerkort application on vegvesen.no: without it, the assisted-test application will not be processed.

2. The assisted-test application

   Submitted through a digital form on the SVV site (the form is in Norwegian) or on paper by post (instructions and form). Attach documentation that you actually need an interpreter: a statement from a public body, a school, a driving school or an employer.

3. The answer and booking

   Most applicants get an answer within 2 weeks; processing can sometimes take up to 4 weeks, and missing documentation may cause further delays. Once approved, you book the test time on Din side as usual.

4. Booking the interpreter

   You book and pay for the interpreter yourself — it must be an approved interpreter from an established interpreting service (SVV requirement). The state fee for the test itself is the ordinary 480 NOK.

The alternative: an oral test without an interpreter

If you understand spoken Norwegian or English but struggle with reading, there is a second assisted format — the oral test with an examiner (med sensor): the examiner personally helps you understand the questions, and English-speaking examiners are available at selected stations listed on the linked official page. The application works the same way.

The interpreter will not learn the rules for you

The interpreter translates the wording — but knowing who gives way at the junction and what the sign means is still on you.
