Service signs provide information about emergency assistance, roadside services, sights and attractions, etc. (unofficial translation)
Service signs are the familiar blue and brown squares along highways: petrol stations, toilets, rest areas, campsites, cafes, repair workshops, emergency telephones, tunnel fire extinguishers, museums, and viewpoints. They are detailed in § 14 of skiltforskriften, with general rules in § 13.
The core concept of this class: service signs provide information. They do not command, prohibit, or modify speed limits. Sign «Rasteplass» does not oblige you to stop, and «Nødtelefon» does not oblige you to make a call — both simply inform you of what is available. Other signs and general road rules can still impose duties at the same location.
Under § 13 nr. 2, a single sign can combine two or more symbols, along with distances and supplementary details about the service. For instance, «2 km» beneath a petrol pump symbol indicates the distance to the facility, not operating hours or length of road.
Colour coding is also functional: brown backgrounds indicate attractions, heritage sites, and outdoor recreation (severdighet, swimming spots, hiking paths, ski trails, cycling routes), while blue backgrounds denote commercial road services and emergency assistance.
