Prohibitory signs indicate that a prohibition applies on the relevant road section or location, or that a previously indicated prohibition ceases to apply. (unofficial translation)
Many prohibitory signs are circular with a red border and white background, but designs vary: parking restrictions and no-entry signs use other colour arrangements. The prohibition takes effect at the sign itself; where it ends depends on the specific rule for each sign: most commonly at the next junction or at a cancellation sign. Be sure to review the exact "zone of application" in the cards below — scope is part of understanding each sign.
Three useful topics to practise are speed limits, stopping and parking, and zones. First, Fartsgrense (sign 362): the speed limit applies until sign 364, a new speed limit sign, a speed limit zone sign, or signs for gatetun / gågate — junctions do not cancel speed limits in Norway! Second, stopping vs parking: stopping prohibited (stans forbudt, sign 370) prohibits voluntary stopping; parking prohibited (parkering forbudt, sign 372) allows only the shortest stop necessary for passengers to get in or out or for loading or unloading, provided other stopping rules permit it — full statutory definitions are in our guide «Stopping and Parking in Norway». Third, zones: junctions do not end a zone. A speed limit zone (366) ends at sign 368, 540 (gatetun) or 548 (gågate). A parking zone (376) ends at 378; signs within the zone may set different rules for a particular stretch. Overtaking bans (signs 334–336) apply on top of trafikkreglene § 12 — full rules are explained in «Overtaking Rules in Norway».
