Before the first drive
- You can practise driving a Class B car from age 16.
- If you are under 25, complete Trafikalt grunnkurs first.
- Carry valid photo identification and the course certificate, or an appropriate driving licence in another category.
- Check your document on Din side before arranging a drive; an agreement with a relative does not by itself establish eligibility.
The exemption from age 25
From age 25 you are exempt from parts of the basic course and can begin practice without completing the entire course or carrying an øvelseskjøringsbevis.
First aid and Trafikant i mørket remain compulsory parts of driver training. The exemption is not a waiver of all mandatory training. Arrange the outstanding components with a driving school.
Seasonal validity
If you need Trafikalt grunnkurs before starting practice, the Trafikant i mørket component must also be completed to practise from 1 November to 15 March.
Without that component, the ordinary certificate permits practice only from 16 March to 31 October. This permit restriction does not apply to those exempt from the basic course before practice under section 2-1, including people aged 25 or over. Compulsory training before obtaining a licence is a separate requirement. Check your basis for eligibility and the document’s validity, not the weather on the day.
Choosing a supervisor
The supervisor must be at least 25 and must have held a licence in the relevant category continuously for the last five years.
Exactly 25 is sufficient; “older than 25” is inaccurate. Check the category and history before driving. Choose a route suited to the learner and agree on calm, short instructions and a safe stopping place if a task becomes too demanding.
The car and the L sign
- Use a Class B car with a clearly visible red L on a white background at the rear.
- Remove the sign when practice ends.
- The supervisor needs an extra mirror.
- A car type-approved with a screen instead of an interior mirror can be used if the supervisor has an adequate rearward view.
- Adjust the seat, mirrors and seat belt before moving.
Making practice useful
- Start by controlling the car confidently in simple conditions, then add junctions, busier traffic and challenging weather gradually.
- This is practice-planning advice, not a substitute for the mandatory curriculum.
- Passengers and a trailer are appropriate only when your skills make them sensible and safe; check the relevant trailer entitlement separately.
- Practise with the transmission you will use for the test: an automatic test produces an automatic restriction.
- Afterwards, discuss one successful situation and one specific goal for next time.
