Plan for the actual crossing
- Check the route’s timetable, payment or booking arrangements, vehicle-size limits and service updates.
- A trailer, roof load or cycle carrier can change overall dimensions.
- Do not assume another route’s fare or boarding procedure applies.
- Contact the operator beforehand about unusual loads or passengers who need help leaving the car.
Join the correct queue
Select a lane using destination signs and staff directions.
There is no universal instruction to take the rightmost empty lane at every terminal. Leave manoeuvring room and avoid switching queues to chase a gap. Watch the signal for your lane: movement in the next row is not permission for you to board. Prepare payment before moving.
Board and secure the vehicle
- Drive slowly as directed by the crew, watching pedestrians, ramp edges and staff.
- Stop where shown, rather than choosing a position for an easier exit.
- Apply the parking brake and use the appropriate gear or parking mode according to the vehicle instructions.
- Keep walkways clear and open doors carefully in the confined space.
Engine rules: distinguish shore from ship
Stop the engine for the crossing; Fjord1 explicitly gives this instruction.
On shore, the road-rule provision on unnecessary idling in section 16 concerns built-up areas or their vicinity and unnecessary noise or emissions. It is not a rule requiring engine shutdown at every momentary stop in every queue. Avoid unnecessary running and follow local requirements.
May passengers stay in the car?
Check the particular vessel and sailing.
A short duration or an apparently open deck does not by itself establish permission. For example, Color Line prohibits passengers from remaining on the car deck during sailing and locks access. Take needed belongings and medication with you, and follow announcements. Agree arrangements for pets and mobility assistance in advance; do not assume you can return to the car at any time.
Leave when instructed
- Return when permitted, fasten seat belts and wait for the crew’s instruction.
- Check ahead and beside the vehicle before moving.
- Do not start the engine early merely because land is approaching.
- Drive off smoothly, account for the ramp angle and continue following directions until you reach the road.
- Predictable movement matters more than being first off the deck.
